Want your kids to love baking? All you need is an embossed rolling pin! Today, I will challenge myself to use the HiMill D1S Desktop CNC and its Rotary Axis Module to create an exquisite rolling pin engraved with small animals. It’s not only fun to make, but the cookies it produces are visually stunning! Processing parameters are attached at the end of this post.

Project Overview

• Project Name: Forest Friends Embossed Rolling Pin
• Equipment: HiMill D1S Desktop CNC + Rotary Module

• Primary Material: Beech or Cherry wood solid rods (Hardwood is better for fine engraving and durability)

Preparation

When making kitchenware, material selection and coating are the keys to safety.

Hardware Materials (BOM)

• Wood: Beech wood rod with a 50mm diameter and 140mm length (or purchase a ready-made smooth rolling pin for secondary processing).
• Coating: Food-grade wood wax oil or mineral oil (Must be non-toxic!).

Tooling Selection

• Roughing: 3.175mm Flat End Mill.
• Fine Engraving: Since this pattern has many details, we recommend a Tapered Ball Nose bit or a V-Carve bit.
• Recommended Spec: R0.5mm Tapered Ball Nose, which can carve clear animal fur and leaf vein details on curved surfaces.

Design & CAM Programming

To machine a cylinder, we need to "roll up" the flat design. Using rotary axis settings allows the 2D pattern to wrap perfectly around the rolling pin.

Step 2.1: Flat Layout Design

• Canvas Size: Width = Rolling pin circumference (Diameter × 3.14).
• Pattern Logic: For raised cookie patterns, the designs on the rolling pin must be intaglio (recessed).

Rotary Machining Process

1. Install the Rotary Axis: Secure the HiMill D1S rotary module and plug in the motor cable.
2. Clamp the Workpiece: Use the 3-jaw chuck and tailstock for concentricity.
3. Zeroing: Zero on the highest surface of the rod.

💡 Observation Log: The rotary axis of the HiMill D1S is very stable. Even when engraving tiny textures like leaves, there was no jitter, and the lines were very smooth.

Finishing & Coating

To prevent dough from sticking, sanding is crucial. After cleaning with an air gun, apply a thick layer of food-grade mineral oil or beeswax. The grain will become clearer and more beautiful instantly.

Conclusion

Making this rolling pin with the HiMill D1S was a perfect gift-making experience. 360-degree patterns align perfectly, and even 2mm small flowers are rendered with high clarity.
