How to Make a DIY Sunflower Napkin Holder with HiMill D1S Desktop CNC (Laser Mode)

Napkins are a household essential, but ordinary tissue boxes can be quite dull. Today, I’m sharing a super simple project—using the HiMill D1S Desktop CNC in Laser Cutting Mode to DIY a stunning sunflower-themed napkin holder.

No complex carving required; you can finish it in just a few steps! Detailed parameters and the drawing download link are provided at the end.

🛠️ Project Overview

  • Project Name Sunflower Napkin Holder
  • Equipment HiMill D1S Desktop CNC + Laser Module
  • Highlights Laser-Cut Hollow Design, Floral Aesthetics
  • Difficulty ⭐ (Beginner-Friendly)
  • Processing Time Approx. 5 Minutes
  • Material 3mm Basswood Plywood

📋 1. Preparation

Precision is the soul of this project, making laser cutting the perfect choice.

Bill of Materials (BOM)

  • Sheet Material: 3mm Basswood Plywood (choose light-colored wood to minimize visible charring).
  • Finishing: Wood varnish or water-based paint (optional).
  • Auxiliary: Clamps or tape to ensure the board stays flat.

Equipment Setup

  • Remove the CNC spindle motor from the HiMill D1S.
  • Install the 10W Laser Module.
  • Connect the laser control cables.

⚙️ 2. Design & Settings

Step 2.1 Vector Design

The core elements include the circular sunflower center, petals, and the base/side panels. We recommend using DXF Vector Files for the best precision.

Step 2.2 Laser Parameters (Reference)

  • Power: 90%
  • Speed: 5 mm/s
  • Passes: 1 Pass (increase to 2 if needed)
💡 Pro Tip: Before the final cut, perform a "material test" on a scrap piece by cutting a small square. If it cuts through cleanly, you’re ready to go.

🚀 3. Laser Processing

Watching the laser "draw" the sunflower outline on the wood is incredibly satisfying.

  1. Secure the Workpiece: Fix the board to the workbed so it is perfectly flat.
  2. Positioning: Import the file into LightBurn and set the origin.
  3. Cutting: Click "Start" and let the HiMill D1S cut each part precisely.
Technique: Cut the internal hollow patterns first, then the outer profiles, to prevent the parts from shifting.

🎨 4. Post-Processing & Assembly

  1. Cleanup: Wipe away any dust or residue.
  2. Sanding: Lightly sand the edges to remove any burrs.
  3. Finishing: Apply clear varnish for better durability (optional).
  4. Assembly: Insert side panels into the base slots and glue the sunflower decorative panels.

With this holder, even your napkins become part of your home decor. Place one on your dining table to instantly boost the aesthetic vibe!
