[CNC Foam Milling] Crafting a Custom EVA Organizer for Your EDC Gear with HiMill D1S

"No more cluttered desks—let every masterpiece find its perfect home."

Who says a desktop CNC machine is only meant for rigid metals and hardwoods? In 2026, versatility is the name of the game for makers. Today, we are stepping out of our comfort zone to challenge soft material machining. We're using the MAXMAKE HiMill D1S to craft a highly satisfying, custom high-density EVA foam organizer for our beloved EDC (Everyday Carry) gadgets.

Through precise cavity milling, we are creating a soft, protective haven that perfectly cradles cold metal parts, showcasing the ultimate beauty of order.

I. Project Overview

Project Name DIY Custom EVA Foam EDC Organizer Insert
Equipment Used MAXMAKE HiMill D1S Desktop CNC
Core Principles High-RPM Soft Material Milling + Multi-Level Cavity Routing
Function Desktop parts organization, showcase display, shockproof protection
Cycle Time Approx. 1.5 Hours
Difficulty Level ★★★☆☆ (The key challenge lies in accurately measuring physical parts and designing clearance tolerances)

II. Prep & Design

The soul of a custom organizer is the "interference fit"—it must be snug but accessible. Before firing up the CAD software, you must take precise caliper measurements of the objects you want to store and leave an appropriate tolerance gap.

Materials & Tooling List

High-Density EVA Foam: Black, 120 x 100 x 20mm block.
Outer Case: A minimalist tin box or a custom CNC-machined aluminum shell.
Tooling (Optimized for Soft Materials): 3.175mm Single Flute Spiral End Mill. (Using a single flute is mandatory. It clears chips rapidly and prevents the foam from melting or tearing during large-area pocketing).
Materials for CNC foam milling: High-density EVA foam block and a single flute end mill.

III. CAM Settings (Machining Parameters)

The golden rule for machining EVA foam is "High Feed Rates, High RPM." If you move too slowly, the localized friction heat will cause the foam edges to melt, scorch, or leave stringy burrs.

Tool: 3.175mm Single Flute Spiral End Mill

Stepover (Ae): 1.27 mm

Stepdown (Ap): 1 mm (Foam offers minimal resistance, so you can increase the depth per pass safely)

Cutting Feed: 600 mm/min

Plunge Feed: 600 mm/min

Spindle Speed: 13,000 RPM

IV. Machining Process

The rigid Z-axis of the HiMill D1S ensures depth accuracy, while the high-speed spindle slices through the foam effortlessly.

1.
Workholding (Crucial): Use heavy-duty double-sided tape to adhere the entire bottom surface of the EVA block to the wasteboard. The base must be perfectly flat to prevent the foam from shifting, lifting, or vibrating during aggressive milling.
2.
Zeroing: Because the foam surface is soft, we recommend the traditional "paper test" method or gentle manual probing. Avoid using an automatic Z-probe (auto-leveling tool), as it might compress the foam before triggering, resulting in a depth error.
3.
Bulk Material Removal: Run the roughing toolpath. The 3.175mm single flute end mill will rapidly clear out the main storage cavities.
4.
Detail Clearing: The machine will then clear the corners for specific items like keycaps and stamps, ensuring they drop in smoothly and sit securely.

V. Post-Processing & Assembly

Foam requires very little post-processing, but a few quick touches make all the difference.

1.
Edge Refining: Freshly cut EVA might have microscopic fuzzy strings along the top edge. Quickly pass a heat gun over the surface to singe them off, or lightly trim them with a sharp utility knife.
2.
Dusting: Use compressed air or a shop vacuum to remove any fine foam debris trapped inside the pockets.
3.
Insert Installation: Press the machined EVA module into your prepared outer case. If your measurements were accurate, it will lock itself in naturally via friction fit.
4.
Load the Gear: Place your EDC playing cards, metal artisan keycaps, brass paw-print stamps, and aluminum sliders into their dedicated slots. Enjoy that incredibly satisfying, tactile fit!

VI. Final Showcase: A Place for Everything

When cold, precision-machined metal parts meet their custom-tailored EVA sanctuary, the result is more than just a box—it's a badge of honor for any Maker.

Flawless Fitment: Whether it's an angular aluminum keycap or an irregularly shaped metal stamp, everything sits securely in its designated home.
Minimalist Black Aesthetics: The stark contrast between the deep black high-density foam and the metallic sheen of brass and aluminum instantly elevates the premium feel.
Tactile Healing: The perfectly damped friction when inserting or removing an item provides a level of customized satisfaction that mass-produced products simply cannot replicate.
