DIY Laser Engraved Cork Coasters with HiMill D1S
Project Overview
Using the multifunction expansion capability of the HiMill D1S Desktop CNC, we switched from CNC cutting mode to laser engraving mode. By precisely controlling laser power and speed, we engraved delicate cat illustrations onto natural cork and turned them into a practical, calming set of desktop accessories.

Phase 1: Prep & Design
Cork is naturally absorbent and heat-resistant, making it ideal for everyday coasters. Its loose fiber structure, however, also puts higher demands on laser precision. For this project, we selected a cute cat vector illustration with clean, expressive linework to test the HiMill D1S on a soft, non-metal material and evaluate how well it could maintain crisp line edges.
Tool Checklist:
- Material: Natural round cork blanks with a flat surface and no large visible impurities.
- Core Accessory: Dedicated laser head attachment for the HiMill D1S.
- Software: Built-in control software for path planning.
Phase 2: CAM Settings
To achieve clear dark-brown lines without bleeding or heavy scorching, we ran several tests and found the best balance point for engraving cork on the HiMill D1S.
Key Machining Parameters:
- Laser Speed: 40 mm/s to maintain stable movement and continuous line quality.
- Laser Power: 15% low-power output to prevent the cork fibers from overheating, blackening at the edges, or catching fire.
- Processing Mode: Vector line engraving.
- Focus Distance: Use the standard focus block to keep the laser focal point right on the cork surface.
Phase 3: Machining
- Leveling: Slight deformation in cork can affect the focus distance, so we used the HiMill D1S flattening and hold-down method to keep the material stable.
- Smoke Extraction: We enabled the built-in air assist and exhaust system. At 15% power, the small amount of smoke was quickly carried away, helping protect the lens while keeping the indoor air cleaner.
- Line Precision: At 40 mm/s, the HiMill D1S motion system stayed remarkably steady. Even fine details such as cat whiskers were reproduced with pixel-level accuracy.
Phase 4: Post-Processing & The Reveal
- Surface Cleaning: After engraving, gently brush away the remaining carbonized powder with a soft-bristle brush.
- Edge Inspection: The 15% power setting was just right. The engraved lines came out in an elevated dark coffee tone with a warm, tactile finish.
- Scene Styling: Place the finished coasters on a warm-toned workbench with a cup of latte, and the everyday desk scene instantly feels more personal and alive.
The Result
A perfect crossover between precision industry and the warmth of home.
- Texture: The natural color created by laser carbonization has more tactile depth than printed graphics.
- Precision: Every detail holds up under a macro lens, showing the charm of a desktop factory at work.
- Sense of Achievement: In about 30 minutes, a simple sketch becomes a complete set of custom coasters.
